Sunset on the Levels

Inspired by the light and vast skies of the Somerset Levels, these images capture the moment where water, land, and air dissolve into one another..

After an afternoon watching birdlife we waited for dusk, hoping to witness a starling murmuration. As the sun dipped beyond the horizon, a spectacular light show set the skies aflame; its shifting, vibrant colours lit the landscape in gold, pink, and burnt orange, From deep within the rushes, a bittern boomed, its haunting sound hanging long on the air. Then the starlings came—at first, distant, swirling forms, then suddenly, a breathtaking, thunderous wave of wings overhead.

This series of prints captures that fleeting, awe-filled moment. Created with one collagraph plate, the varied edition uses viscosity inking—a technique where inks of different viscosities repel one another—embracing the unpredictability of colour and form. Each print is a unique response, echoing the fluid movement, pulsing energy, and atmospheric glow of that extraordinary evening.
